Djou picks up campaign donation pace in mayoral race

CRAIG T. KOJIMA / JULY 2016

Charles Djou answers questions at The Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association’s first mayoral forum featuring the three major candidates.

Former U.S. Rep. Charles Djou’s campaign raised $225,507 in July, three times more than that of either Mayor Kirk Caldwell or former Mayor Peter Carlisle during that same period, a sign his bid to unseat the incumbent is on the upswing.

The Caldwell campaign raised only $68,855 during the same period while the Carlisle camp reported raising $56,748.

In July, the Djou camp spent $277,474 and had a cash balance of $194,174. That’s less than the $524,243 spent by the Caldwell team, which had a cash balance of $774,011. The Carlisle camp spent $32,237 in July, has a balance of $24,512 but a campaign deficit of $2,187.

Looking at the entire, two-year election cycle, however, Caldwell has raised and spent exponentially more on the incumbent’s re-election bid than either Djou’s or Carlisle’s campaigns. The Caldwell campaign has raised $2,851,098 and spent $2,101,202, while the Djou camp has raised $484,894 to date and spent $290,719, and Carlisle has raised $57,177 and spent $32,666.

Election financing reports were due to the state Campaign Spending Commission by the end of Wednesday.

No surprise here. People are disappointed and outright disgusted at Krook Caldwell’s performance and his $11B rail scam and they’re voting with their ballots AND their wallets. And if you examine Djou’s donations and support, over half of it is coming from lifelong Democrats!

In fact, when I see photos his campaign is posting through social media, I’m seeing people I’ve known for years and mostly through Democratic Party channels. Union operatives, public sector managers, cops, construction workers and retired HSTA-member school teachers!

This is truly one of the first times we’ve seen such a radical, frenzied outpouring of bipartisan support in the history of our state’s politics, and what does that tell you? Krook Caldwell must be some kind of extra special horrific scummy slimy disaster for the most prominent Republican in Hawaii to now have the backing of half the Democratic Party, in the bluest state in America, propelling him at light speed down a path lined with cheering lifelong Democrats and Republicans that ends on the third floor of Honolulu Hale at the helm of one of our nation’s largest cities.

A Hollywood screenwriter couldn’t have come up with a more dramatic story.

Clod-well is a one-term Mayor…Honolulu is tired of the BS!
