If you temporarily need to get out your car, take extra precautions and double and triple check that car is in park with hand brake on, especially if on a hill. You should also turn off engine. Also never have door open when car is moving, even slowly. Many people adjust their parking by opening their door and leaning out to see how much to move forward or back. Never do this! Freak accidents can happen for any reason and if you fall out, it will be tragic. Take the inconvenience of extra precautions because many times you will not have a second chance.
Your advice squares with things I always do, upon advice from my daughter. Thank you so much for reminding me and others of a safer procedure, Another thing my daughter has advised me is that, if I have to park faced uphill, for example in order to unlock my gate, I don’t walk behind the car.
Of course, no matter how careful one is, accidents can still happen. I am very sorry that one happened to the poor woman.
So sad. R.I.P.
If you care for the safety of a loved one, consider a Tesla. The way its designed, you can never leave the car in drive or not have the parking brake on. Its designed to be fool proof. I was surprised the first time I found out how differently its designed for safety, in a exact situation like this. Even the Star Trek actor and his Jeep, would still be here if he drove a Tesla.
uku – Not so fast. Handbrake? Really? Not every car has one. Many cars have the foot operated “Parking Brake” which is the correct term.
Parking on a street on a hill drivers must turn their wheel into the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling downhill. Then ensure car is in Park, parking brake set. Hmmm, guessing you forgot this.
Also forgot to mention if driving a stick and you need to open the door, always put the shifter in neutral, foot off the clutch, one foot on the brake.
It is perfectly safe to open the driver’s door, lean out to check your car’s position if you have your seat belt on. Belted there is no way you are falling out of the car. You do wear your seat belt right? Newer cars with backup cameras basically eliminate the need to open your door, an even better option.
agree…God be with her soul.
Thanks for your Akamai advice. When on a hill, turn the wheel slightly to your right or left for added precautionary measure! If parking next to a sidewalk turn your wheel toward the sidewalk .
My deepest ALOHA to her ohana.
Sad. To have lived so long and then this…
RIP
