Coaches rank UH women’s volleyball team No. 6 in AVCA poll

STAR-ADVERTISER / DEC. 2015

Hawaii’s Nikki Taylor pumped her fist as the Rainbow Wahine celebrated the winning point against TCU in the fifth set of the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament in Dec. 2015 in College Station Texas.

The Hawaii women’s volleyball team was ranked No. 6 in today’s AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll, the highest ranking since 2005 when opening at No. 4.

Defending national champion Nebraska was favored to repeat, receiving 60 first-place votes. Texas, with three votes, came in at No. 2 followed by Minnesota, Wisconsin and Kansas. No. 11 Stanford had the final vote.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season on Aug. 26 when hosting the fourth-ranked Badgers. Other ranked teams Hawaii’s scheduled are No. 7 Washington and No. 12 UCLA with Arizona 31st and Long Beach State 33rd.

Wow, not one PAC 12 team ahead of UH? No respect for west coast anymore. Steady shift of power to the midwest, east, and south.

I think you may be correct about the power shift. I was thinking about that after the exceptional performance of Georgia in the NCAA Swimming championships.

That’s Greeley pumping her fist in the photo. Nikki is between Maglio and Higgins.

This early in the season it’s more a distraction, influenced by bias and ego. Recall

-Hawaii defeated Texas (in preseason) last year,
-Texas beat Nebraska twice during the season,
    – Minnesota beat Nebraska during the season,

The only take away is that Hawaii needs to improve (the system and the players) in order to win it all.
Keeping the status quo is insufficient, systemic changes and personnel changes may be necessary.

Unfortunately, dramatic change is not happening until Shogun Shoji decides to give up his throne. As the balance of power shifts towards the east, UH is stuck with a caricature of past success (like the Shogun poster they ridiculously mount at their practices – really, how silly is that?). As more top recruits are courted by the top power conference teams, most of them will not even have UH as a marginal consideration. Instead of getting ready for the post-Shogun era which will be upon us in no time, UH continues to cater to the old guy who surrounds himself with subservient “insiders” from the past without serious consideration of a successor. The assistants under him right now are ALL ka people with little in terms of being a worthy successor. All this “don’t worry,be happy” atmosphere is enough to make one puke.
