A critical traffic accident closed the northbound lanes of the Likelike Highway in Kalihi this morning.

A 72-year-old Kaneohe woman died today after her vehicle crashed head-on with another vehicle in Kalihi.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the woman as Ione Adams. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Police said the woman was driving a 2014 sport utility vehicle on the Likelike Highway when it crossed over the median and collided with another vehicle driven by a 41-year-old Hawaii Kai woman, who suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to the crash scene at the intersection of Likelike Highway and School Street at about 8:55 a.m. Paramedics took the woman by ambulance to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she later died.

The accident marked the 39th Oahu traffic fatality this year compared to 32 fatalities the same time last year.

Police closed the northbound lanes of Likelike from School Street onward while an investigation was conducted, and reopened the lanes at 10:41 a.m.

what way is “northbound”? C’mon SA….MAUKA??? MAKAI???

  2. Papakolea says:

Some construction or utility company is shutting down the right northbound lane right above School street before 8:00 AM when the traffic is still very heavy. SA should ask whether their street usage permit allows them to close the lane that early and whether it had anything to do with the accident.

Gotta be a health issue or cellphone use that caused her to cross the median strip?
