    A strong quake struck near Australia today.

A strong earthquake struck near Australia today, but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The preliminary magnitude 6.3 quake was centered 17 miles southwest of Macquarie Island, Australia, at a depth of 6.2 miles at 11:46 a.m. Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that “a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”

No serious injuries were immediately reported.
