The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 36-year-old man killed Thursday when the car he was a passenger in crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a truck in Kalihi.

Kaleo Kaio of Honolulu was a passenger in a 1994 Mustang driven by a 24-year-old man, who tried to overtake another car, crossed the center line and hit a truck driven by a 33-year-old Kalihi man, according to police. The incident occurred at 9:36 a.m. on North School Street.

The 24 year-old driver remains hospitalized in serious condition.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of Kaio’s death.

This was Oahu’s 39th traffic death, compared with 34 at the same time a year ago.

why was this idiot trying to pass cars at 9:30 in the morning???? Speeding, high on something…idiots. What vending machine did he get his license from??? code of conduct on the road is so eroding that its no longer fun to drive….

TV news reports said cars were stopped because a pedestrian was in the crosswalk. This driver tried to overtake car in front of him, crossed the double yellow lines and crashed head on with the truck. As in a lot of these crashes, the passenger dies and the driver doesn’t. My deepest ALOHA to the passenger’s ohana.

Yep, total idiot. I mean who goes into the oncoming lane to pass cars on School Street? Total idiot, killed his friend, deserves to be prosecuted.

Sad for the passenger who died. When are people going to learn that driving is a huge responsibility and learn how to control their vehicle. Saving the extra couple of seconds or a minute is not worth it. Now this driver lost his car and his friend.

What happened to the truck driver? Hopefully he wasn’t injured. The driver of the Mustang should be charged with manslaughter but we all know that won’t happen. After all it was just an “accident” and he was a “good boy”. Maybe even a “father figure” or a “wingman”. Too bad the driver didn’t die too. Then there’d be one less parasite on the streets endangering me.

Hope they charge the driver with murder 1
