Missing inmate returned to custody
A missing Waiawa Correctional Facility inmate was captured Saturday and returned to state custody.
Kurt Lopes, 30, was reported missing during a headcount at the Waiawa facility about 9 p.m. Thursday, a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said.
Police arrested Lopes at the Waipahu Walmart on Kupuohi Street at about 6:50 p.m. Saturday for investigation of second-degree escape. A 29-year-old Kapolei women was arrested with Lopes for investigation of hindering prosecution.
Lopes was taken to Oahu Community Correctional Center this morning and will be transferred to Halawa Correctional Center, the DPS spokeswoman said.
State officials are investigating how Lopes escaped. He was classified as a minimum-custody inmate, serving time for first-degree burglary and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
Waiawa Correctional Facility consists of dorm-style housing for minimum custody male inmates, DPS said.

usual incompetence
And it happens over and over again.
He got promoted from Waiawa to Halawa. Dummy…Had it made in Waiawa.
paniolo, agree. I’ve visited Waiawa. It’s lax; inmates walk around like a school campus and lush garden. Now he’ll be in lockup, with no sun, breeze, greenery or female staff, other than ACO’s. Sad but stupid choices.
Choices expected from idiots that can be easily identified. Stupidity is as stupid does, sounds like I’ve heard it before.
True and cooler temperature wise. It is a country club atmosphere.
Neck tatoo special sale
tattoo: not the best thing to have if you want to escape
Also, not the best thing to have when you already have one strike against you when you apply for a job I would imagine.
Highly doubt he ever thought of working for a living. It’s easier for some to live off the system.
What an idiot. He escapes minimum security and now will get extra years in Halawa. LOL!! too much!
Serving time for “unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle”. He must have been prosecuted prior to the current prosecutor.
Good one
I wonder how they were able to find him so quickly. It might have been the red shirt he was wearing.
Hope he likes administrative segregation in special holding……23 hours a day inside the cell….you act up or get stupid and the respnse team will make you pay dearly…..
I find it very very hard to believe that someone would give up Waiawa for Halawa. My guess is that he is either a government “plant” to uncover something they are investigating at Halawa or he is on a mission to do some hurt to an individual over there.
