More than 250 dogs rescued from Makaha home

One man was arrested and more than 250 dogs were rescued today at a Makaha home, police said.

Police executed a search warrant at the home this morning and arrested a 60-year-old man for investigation of one count of second-degree animal cruelty, a Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman said.

More than 250 dogs were recovered and taken to the Hawaiian Humane Society, she said.

The Humane Society said the dogs were living in “inhumane” conditions and the nonprofit is now evaluating each dog’s health.

Strained by the large number of dogs rescued, the Humane Society is asking the public for donations of wire crates or towels or by volunteering at its Waialae Avenue campus.

I’ve been there many times and was lucky to adopt a wonderful dog from there. The owners are very nice people trying to save animals that no one else will care for. They are a No Kill shelter and are overwhelmed with people dumping animals at their shelter because they know they won’t be euthanized.
It’s far from an ideal facility, but they mean well doing their best to keep all these animals fed and taken care of as best as they can.
Hope there is some appropriate reporting on the good that this shelter has been doing.
    They are not cruel people.

Thanks for your post. Our concern is why they reached the conclusion that dogs were living in “inhumane” conditions. Best as they can is not good enough.

I get that this is a kind person with good intentions. It is not like he is a puppy mill breeder in it for the money, BUT that is too many dogs for him to care for. He needs to have a licensed rescue, with dogs that have clean living and good food and are spayed and neutered and get the shots. This takes volunteers, money and a lot of help. NO ONE can take care of that many dogs properly. This may be slow torture for some of these dogs.

Poor dogs and poor tormented neighbors who had to endure this.
