Man dies after moped crash in Kalihi

A 19-year-old man has died after he lost control of the moped he was driving and crashed into a guardrail in Kalihi Saturday night, police said.

The collision happened around 9:20 p.m. on Kalihi Street near School Street.

According to police, the Kalihi man was traveling southbound on Kalihi Street when he lost control and was ejected onto to the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

At this time, speed appears to be a factor and drugs may be a contributing factor, police said.

This is Oahu’s 51st traffic fatality this year, compared to 44 at the same time last year.

SA headline writer: “Man dies after fatal moped crash” makes no sense and begs the question “Who else died?” Headline should be “Man dies IN fatal moped crash.”

If you’ve driven that area you’ve also noticed the “POT HOLES”… more like craters in the road… I bet that might have had a thing to do with loosing control too.

Sorry for the family as this is a terrible loss whatever the circumstances.

What still exists is the moped problem on the island. The City Council has issued new rules & regulations on mopeds – Annual Moped Inspections mandated by the first of the year.

-Illegal/modified mufflers, even though there exists current laws forbidding illegal modifications, but not enforced by police. Mopeds exceeding the 25mph. 2-stroke engines.
    – Registration/Licensing of every moped. How about obtaining Moped insurance ?

This new law supposedly take effect in 2017, however without the necessary supervision/oversight remains to be seen.

I hope the moped operators learn a lesson from the victim. Risky business.

Speed would not be a factor if these idiot moped racers would obey the speed limit..
