No. 9 UCLA routs Rainbow Wahine hoops team

Four UCLA players scored in double figures and the ninth-ranked Bruins overwhelmed the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team 72-49 today at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

UCLA ran out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter and improved to 6-1 while sending the Rainbow Wahine (2-6) to their fourth straight loss and second straight against a top-10 opponent.

UCLA forward Monique Billings scored 12 of her 16 points in the first quarter and guard Jordin Canada finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Guard Kennedy Burke also scored 13 points and Nicole Kornet added 10.

UH junior Sarah Toeaina represented the bulk of the UH offense for much of the game and finished with 16 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field. Guard Olivia Crawford finished with 10 points and Briana Harris scored all of her 13 points in the second half.

Billings, a 6-foot-4 junior, scored 12 points in the first quarter and the Bruins drained seven 3-pointers in the first half to take a 45-17 lead into the break.

Hawaii went 1-for-11 from the field and committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter and mustered just three points the first 10 minutes. UH went into halftime with 14 turnovers and UCLA held a 25-0 advantage in points off turnovers and 17-0 on second-chance points.

The Bruins led by as many as 33 in the third quarter. UH outscored UCLA 18-13 in the fourth quarter led by Harris’ three 3-pointers.

UH returns to the Stan Sheriff Center to face Hawaii Pacific on Dec. 11.
