Major earthquake strikes near Fiji; no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near Fiji today, but Hawaii is not under threat of a tsunami.
U.S. Geological Survey officials reported that the earthquake struck at around 11:53 a.m. Hawaii time. The epicenter was located about 141 miles southwest of Nadi, Fiji at a depth of 9 miles.
Though no tsunami threat was issued for Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami threat message for other parts of the Pacific close to the earthquake.
