Worker crushed to death in Waipio, police say
A 28-year-old worker was crushed to death Thursday while unloading construction material in the Waipio commercial area, police said.
Xue Zhong Yu, of Honolulu, died of asphyxia due to compression of the neck and chest, said the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office. The office ruled his death an accident.
Police said Yu was unloading construction material from a shipping container when he was crushed at about 9:15 p.m.
Police opened an unattended death investigation.

Really tragic story. I hope that businesses will stress safety procedures more so that something like this does not happen to another unfortunate human being. My deepest condolences to his family.

Poor fellow. Not many details in the story. A citizen? How many years had he been working there? How exactly did it happen? How could it be prevented in the future? Peace.
Dangers like that can happen any day when working in construction jobs leading to death or permanent injuries. That’s the reason why they get paid as much as they do.
Your post is incorrect. While construction deaths were common in the early days, decades of workplace safety upgrades under OSHA and in Hawaii, HIOSH, have virtually eliminated the chances of dying on the job. Unless you work EOD, pay has nothing to do with it.
Death / injury usually occurs when workers fail to follow established safety guidelines,equipment not inspected, short cuts taken, worker tries to do something without help versus with assistance.
While we do not know the circumstances of his death, thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends.
OSHA/HIOSH will investigate, find the cause. If the employer failed to follow safety standards, legal action will be taken against them.
