‘Moana’ star to join Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra
As fans of Disney’s blockbuster computer-animated hit “Moana” return to theaters nationwide this month to catch the movie’s singalong version, those in Hawaii will have a chance to hear local girl Auli’i Cravalho bring her starring role to life next week alongside the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra.
Cravalho, a junior at Kamehameha Schools, is the voice of Moana, a teenage girl on a fictional Polynesian island some 2,000 years ago who discovers her ancestors’ wayfinder lineage and decides to chase her dreams with help from the demigod Maui, who is played by Dwayne Johnson. “How Far I’ll Go,” written by Lin-Manuel Miranda — and nominated for an Academy Award this year in the best song category — is Moana’s spotlight musical number in the movie, and Cravalho will perform the song alongside the HSO on Feb. 17 as part of “A Night on the Red Carpet” at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
Under the direction of maestro Richard Kaufman, the evening’s program will feature a number of tunes from popular movie soundtracks, including “Gone With the Wind,” “The Witches of Eastwick,” and “Forrest Gump.” Music from classic films like “Ben Hur,” “Robin Hood” and “Blazing Saddles” will also be performed.
In addition, the HSO will recognize the work of Academy Award-winning composer Elmer Bernstein with performances of his music from three films, “Hawaii,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Magnificent Seven.” Works by composers Henry Mancini and John Williams will also be featured.
Tickets for “A Night on the Red Carpet” start at $27; call 946-8742 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays to purchase by phone.
