Maui firefighters conducted a search for a man swept into the ocean on Jan. 23.

Maui firefighters rescued a Canadian visitor today after he injured himself in a fall and could no longer walk at a popular tourist attraction on Maui’s north shore.

The man was hurt at Olivine Pools, which are tide pools formed in the lava rock along the ocean near mile marker 16 on Kahekili Highway in Kahakuloa. Last month, a Utah man was swept away by a wave at the pools, and his body was never found.

The 65-year-old Ontario man was injured today when he lost his footing and fell onto the rocks at about 3 p.m., a Maui Fire Department spokesman said. The man couldn’t put weight on his feet and wasn’t able to walk back up the trail.

Firefighters picked up the man by helicopter and took him to awaiting paramedics on Kahekili Highway. Paramedics took the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

The man was injured during a high-surf warning for parts of the state.
