UH basketball tops Cal Poly for road split

On the strength of its 3-point shooting and a monster game from Noah Allen, Hawaii led wire to wire in an 82-61 win over Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., today.

UH (13-13, 7-6 Big West) went 13-for-23 (56.5 percent) from long range and shot 50.9 percent overall. It split its two-game road trip and beat the Mustangs (8-18, 3-9) for the fifth straight time.

The season-high-tying performance in made 3s was one short of matching the program record.

Two days after scoring just six points in a 56-54 loss at UC Santa Barbara, Allen connected on his first six shots as part of a 20-point first half. He finished with 30 points on 10-for-16 shooting — his fourth 30-point game of the season — to go with nine rebounds and five assists.

Gibson Johnson added 14 points and six rebounds and Jack Purchase contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Leland Green scored nine and Sheriff Drammeh seven.

UH scored the first seven points of the game. It connected on its first five 3-point attempts and 11 of its first 14 overall for a 27-12 lead.

Cal Poly rallied with a 14-2 run, ended by Allen’s third 3.

The Mustangs kept coming on, getting to within 35-33 on a Ridge Shipley drive.

Allen responded with a step-back 3 with the shot clock winding down, giving him 20 in the half.

Then Johnson broke out for a breakaway dunk and followed it up with a paint jumper in the final seconds of the half as UH claimed a 44-37 lead at intermission.

The Mustangs scored the first two buckets of the second half to get within three, but Allen and Purchase hit the Mustangs with 3s to push the lead to 50-41, followed by a paint pass from Allen to Johnson for a layup.

Donovan Fields stole the the ball from Brocke Stepteau and scored a three-point play in transition, but that was the end of the Mustangs’ push.

Allen kept coming, getting to the line. Sheriff Drammeh added a top-arc 3 and the lead grew to 58-44 with 14 minutes remaining.

UH extended it to a 17-point game on a corner 3 by Matt Owies on a feed from Allen.

Allen and Johnson dunked ahead of Cal Poly’s desperate press in the final minutes to seal the deal.

Cal Poly was held to 37.7 percent shooting, including 5-for-20 (25 percent) from long range.

Hawaii plays its senior night on Feb. 25 against Cal State Fullerton.
