BYU ends Hawaii’s 15-match win streak

Brendan Sander put down 14 kills and Jake Langlois added 13 as No. 3 Brigham Young swept No. 4 Hawaii 28-26, 25-18, 25-20 in an MPSF volleyball match tonight in Provo, Utah.

It was the first defeat in 15 matches for the Rainbow Warriors, who had not lost since being swept at Long Beach State on Jan. 20. Hawaii (20-3, 10-3) has not won in Smith Fieldhouse since 2003, a skein of 13 straight, and is 3-24 in visits there.

Sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg had 16 kills for the Warriors and senior hitter Kupono Fey 10. Hawaii, the top blocking team in the country, was out-blocked 12-4, the dozen stuffs a season-high for a 3-0 win.

Brigham Young (18-2, 12-1 MPSF) also won the dig war 19-16. The Cougars hit .440 for the match also a season-high for a sweep to the Warriors’ .212.

The teams meet again at 3 p.m. HST on Saturday
