Police investigate possible drowning on Big Island

A man died today after being pulled from the water in South Kohala, Hawaii island police said.

Officers responded at 9:37 a.m. to a report of an unresponsive man pulled out of Makaiwa Bay off South Kaniku Drive in the Kohala Coast resort area.

Firefighters performed CPR on the man and took him to North Hawaii Community Hospital where he died at 10:55 a.m., police said.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of his death.
