Long Beach State’s McCaughan dominates baseball ‘Bows

Alex Fitchett’s towering home run in the ninth helped the ’Bows avoid their first shutout since a season-opening 4-0 loss to North Carolina State.

Darren McCaughan did not allow a run in eight innings to lead Long Beach State to a 2-1 baseball victory over Hawaii today at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

McCaughan allowed seven hits, but struck out eight and induced three inning-ending double plays.

Brendan Hornung spaced nine hits and struck out five in absorbing the loss.

The teams meet Saturday at 11 a.m. Hawaii time in the second game of this three-game Big West series.
