Police are investigating an assault case involving a 4-year-old girl who suffered burns and injuries at a home in Maili.

The assault occurred at a Hila Street residence sometime between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday. A source said the girl suffered burns from a cigarette and a lighter.

Paramedics responded at about 7:25 a.m. and treated the victim for first and second-degree burns to her lip, arm and hands and an abrasion to her neck.

Emergency Medical Services transported her in serious condition to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, said EMS spokeswoman Shayne Enright.
