Five people are safe after being rescued today by the Coast Guard off their 50-foot sailing vessel in the Kaiwi Channel between Oahu and Molokai.

Coast Guard personnel rescued five people — two adults and three children — who were adrift on a 50-foot sailing vessel in the Kaiwi Channel today.

The operator of the boat contacted the Coast Guard at 12:45 p.m. to report that the vessel was in distress and taking on water.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew safely transported the mariners back to Barbers Point Coast Guard Air Station.

The Coast Guard also dispatched a C-130 Hercules airplane crew and a 45-foot response boat to the scene.

The vessel remains adrift with an attached strobe light while the owner works with the Coast Guard on a salvage plan. The channel today had 25 mph winds and seas of 6 to 8 feet.

No injuries were reported.
