A 47-year-old electrical worker was taken to a hospital in critical condition early today after being struck by a vehicle driven by an allegedly impaired 22-year-old man in Honolulu, police said.
At about 12:40 a.m., police said the 22-year-old man was traveling westbound on the Pali Highway on-ramp when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the rear of an unoccupied utility van parked in a construction work zone. The vehicle then struck a guardrail and the worker who was behind an aerial boom truck.
Police said the worker, from Ewa Beach, was pinned between the boom truck and the vehicle, about 53 feet east of the Queen Emma Street overpass.
Paramedics treated the man and took him to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. It’s unknown if speed was involved.
Officers arrested the driver on suspicion of first-degree negligent injury and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
