California man rescued after injuring ankle on Maui trail
Hana firefighters helped today Haleakala National Park rangers rescue an injured Vacaville, Calif., man off the Pipiwai Trail.
Firefighters responded at 1:28 p.m.
The Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter and Kahului rescue crew airlifted the 59-year-old man, who had injured his ankle while hiking two miles along the trail near the Waimoku Falls in the Kipahulu District of the park.
Park rangers treated the man for his injuries when firefighters arrived. Firefighters placed the man in a rescue basket and airlifted him to a landing zone near the trailhead at 2:30 p.m. to waiting paramedics.
He was taken by ambulance to the Hana Health Clinic for further treatment.
