Man charged with shooting three during Big Isle confrontation

Hawaii island police charged 49-year-old Rodney E. Wilbur Sr. in connection with a Puna shooting on Sunday.

Hawaii County police today charged a 49-year-old Mountain View man in connection with a Puna shooting Sunday in which three Puna men were injured.

Rodney Wilbur Sr. was charged with second-degree attempted murder and firearms charges, and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Wednesday in South Hilo District Court.

Wilbur’s bail was set at $275,000 bail.

At 6:21 p.m. Sunday, multiple gunshots were fired during a confrontation between two groups of people at the Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki in lower Puna.

Three men injured during the gunfire were taken to the Hilo Medical Center.

One of them, a 35-year-old Pahoa man, was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He remained in critical condition today.

The other two, both Mountain View men, ages 25 and 27, remained in stable condition.

Witnesses identified Wilbur as the shooter who shot the 35-year-old man.

He was arrested shortly after leaving the scene.
