H-3 Kaneohe bound reopened after vehicle crash

Police have reopened the Kaneohe-bound lanes of the H-3 freeway after closing them due to a vehicle crash that seriously hurt three people in the Hirano Tunnel this morning.

The crash involved a large military vehicle and sedan in the middle of the tunnel at about 9:45 a.m, authorities said. The Kaneohe-bound lanes remained closed two hours after the crash.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said two women inside the heavily damaged sedan were able to exit the vehicle on their own before fire rescue arrived. The occupants inside the military vehicle were uninjured.

City Emergency Medical Services crews arrived and treated the sedan driver for neck pain and her passenger for head and hip pain. Both women were transported to a hospital in serious condition.

A motorcyclist in his 40s also was also transported to the hospital in serious condition after suffering abrasions to the left side of his body when he slid his motorcycle on the roadway in attempt to stop.
