A 20-year-old Kapaa woman who police said assaulted a Kauai county bus driver who told her she could not drink liquor on the bus remained in police custody today.

At about 9:30 p.m. Friday, the woman attempted to board the Kauai Bus fronting First Hawaiian Bank at Kukui Grove Shopping Center with a bottle of liquor in her hand, Kauai police said.

When the driver, a 50-year-old Anahola woman, told the younger woman that drinking alcohol was prohibited on the bus, the younger woman began to argue and struck the driver multiple times in the face, police said.

The younger woman exited the bus, but was stopped shortly afterwards by police who happened to be nearby.

Officers arrested the woman for investigation of third-degree assault, interference with the operator of a transit vehicle, and a prohibition offense. Her bail was set at $1,550.
