A 49-year-old Hilo man died after he was involved in a two-vehicle collision in Hamakua.
His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Just after 7:20 a.m Saturday, police said a 2001 Dodge Caravan was traveling westbound on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road) near the 38-mile marker when he overtook vehicles and struck a 2015 Honda Fit traveling eastbound.
The Dodge driver was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
An autopsy is expected to be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Police believe speed was involved. Alcohol and drugs were not factors.
Police said the Honda driver, a 36-year-old Mountain View woman who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported in critical condition to the same hospital.
This is the 27th traffic-related fatality on the Big Island compared to 23 at the same time last year.
