The state Sheriff Special Operations Fugitive Unit captured a violent fugitive today.

The unit, attached to the FBI Violent Crime Task Force, worked with the ATF, Honolulu police and the FBI to arrest Alan Tavares, the Department of Public Safety said.

Tavares was wanted on a federal felon in possession of a firearm warrant and a HOPE probation violation warrant.

He was found in a vehicle near Sand Island Park, and tried to flee. The task force surrounded him, blocking the road.

Tavares will be turned over to the FBI. One of his two passengers, a 31-year-old man, was also arrested on a parole violation. A female passenger was released pending charges.
