Gas odor prompts fire response in Kapolei

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to reports of a possible gas leak near the Campbell Industrial Complex in Kapolei, but determined none was released this morning.

Fire and Hazardous Material personnel responded at about 9:50 a.m. and pinpointed the source of the odor to Island Energy Services at 91-480 Malakole St. They determined that a small amount of ethyl mercaptan was released during scheduled maintenance of the odorant additive system.

Ethyl mercaptan is a clear liquid with a strong rotten egg odor and is commonly added to otherwise odorless gaseous products such as liquefied petroleum gas to help warn of gas leaks.

No injuries were reported.
