Dru Brown said the decision to transfer was based on a desire to be closer to his family in Northern California. Brown’s grandfather died during the holiday break.

Citing family reasons, University of Hawaii starting quarterback Dru Brown has requested — and received — a release from his football scholarship.

Brown told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he will earn a degree after UH’s first summer session. After that, he will be eligible to transfer without redshirting.

Brown said the decision was based on a desire to be closer to his family in Northern California. Brown’s grandfather died during the holiday break.

“This decision has nothing to do with football,” Brown said. “My family comes before this game.”

UH coach Nick Rolovich praised Brown’s contributions, saying, “I appreciate the things he did for this program and community. He represented himself, his family, the university and the state well.”

Two incoming freshman quarterbacks — Chevan Cordeiro of Saint Louis School and Jeremy Moussa of Chino, Calif. — are joining the Rainbow Warriors this year.

“It’s an opportunity for other guys,” Rolovich said.
