Big Isle police search for suspect in attempted murder

Hawaii island police are looking for a man in connection with an attempted murder investigation after he allegedly fired a gunshot at a police officer in Puna today.

At about 6 a.m., police said officers responded to a report of gunshots fired in the Tiki Gardens subdivision. A woman, 29, was heard yelling immediately after.

One of the officers spotted a male attempting to flee on a dirt bike but the male fell to the ground. Police said the suspect then pointed a gun at the officer and fired a shot. The suspect then fled on foot.

No injuries were reported.

Police are also looking for the woman to check on her well-being and who might have information on the suspect. Detectives said the woman reportedly left the subdivision in a vehicle sometime after the gunshots were fired.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the police department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Det. Levon Pomai Stevens of the Hawaii Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2377 or e-mail at levon.stevens@hawaiicounty.gov.
