Hee announces bid for governor

Former Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee and former state Sen. Clayton Hee has announced he is running for governor.

Hee, a Democrat, served two years in the state House of Representatives, and represented Windward Oahu as a state senator from 1984 to 1988. He was also an OHA trustee from 1990 to 2002, when Hee ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor.

Hee returned to the state Senate in 2004, where he remained until 2014. He also ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House in 2006.

Hee, 64, announced his plan to run for governor in a brief post and video on Facebook, and an announcement emailed to media outlets this morning.

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for governor,” Hee said in his statement. “I am running for a number of reasons, however the most important reason is because I want to see a better Hawaii for our future.”
