Dangerous surf, box jellyfish strike Kauai’s north shore

Ocean safety officials are advising the public to avoid swimming or snorkeling along Kauai’s north shore due to dangerous ocean conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for north and east shores of Kauai and Niihau. The warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Lifeguards have observed waves of up to 21 feet and strong rip currents on the north shore.

Bystanders are also advised to exercise caution along the shoreline.

Signs have been posted at affected beaches.

Beachgoers are also advised to avoid swimming at Salt Pond Beach due to an influx of box jellyfish.
