Falling rock kills hiker in Haleakala National Park

A 34-year-old Indiana man died when a rock hit him near the base of a waterfall Saturday at Oheo Gulch in East Maui.

The Maui Fire Department says fire crews and park rangers from Haleakala National Park recovered the body of the man this morning near the Waimoku Falls in the Kipahulu District of the park.

Maui officials said emergency dispatchers received a call at 6:21 p.m. Saturday from a man who reported that his friend was hit in the head by a large rock near the base of the waterfall. The man had hiked to the falls with a 30-year-old man and 28-year-old woman, both of Wailuku, and a 30-year-old woman from Indiana.
