The Hawaii County Fire Department says a 38-year-old man drowned Sunday in waters off Waipio Valley Beach in Honokaa.
The department responded to the 11:24 a.m. call with an engine company, an ambulance, a battalion chief and two helicopters. When the first units arrived at the beach three minutes later, bystanders were already performing CPR on the male.
Further efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.
