Hiker, paddlers rescued on Maui over weekend
Maui firefighters responded to five people who ran into trouble in the ocean after strong winds pushed them out to sea in Ukumehame over the weekend.
At about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a 39-year-old woman who sustained an ankle injury at Makamakaole Gulch. Firefighters and medics hiked to the woman and carried her to the trailhead.
During the rescue, firefighters received a call of five people — two stand-up paddleboarders and three kayakers — in distress. Once they completed the hiker rescue, firefighters aboard Air 1 helicopter, a personal watercraft unit and the Coast Guard responded to Ukumehame at about 3:20 p.m.
Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsuhiro, spokesman of the Maui Fire Department, said a private vessel rescued four people from the ocean.
Firefighters and the Coast Guard continued their search for the fifth person when the personal watercraft unit located and rescued the individual who was about two miles offshore.
No injuries were reported.
