Major earthquake strikes off Fiji, poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A very strong earthquake struck off the coast of Fiji this morning but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary magnitude 7.8 quake struck at 5:49 a.m. Hawaii time 25.9 miles south-southeast of Levuka, Fiji at a depth of 415 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.
No serious injuries were immediately reported.
