Strong quake off New Caledonia does not pose tsunami threat
A strong earthquake off the coast of New Caledonia does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary magnitude 6.1 quake struck at 9:31 a.m. 145.8 miles east-southeast of Tadine, New Caledonia at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.
