Driver arrested in fatal pedestrian accident in Waiahole
A 76-year-old pedestrian has died after he was struck by a vehicle in Waiahole.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified him as Orencio D. Timbas of Kaneohe. The official cause of death is pending.
Police said a sport utility vehicle operated by a 28-year-old Kahuku woman was traveling southbound on Kamehameha Highway near Waiahole Valley Road when the vehicle struck the male pedestrian later identified as Timbas who was crossing the highway in a marked crosswalk at approximately 4:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said the driver fled the scene but later returned.
Emergency Medical Services treated and transported Timbas in critical condition to Queen’s Medical Center where he later died.
Police said speed was a factor in the crash.

Police arrested the driver on suspicion of failure to render aid, accidents involving death or serious bodily injury and criminal contempt of court.
This is the 50th traffic-related fatality on Oahu this year compared to 32 at the same time last year.
