The male has been identified as John William Myers, 48, of no local address, according to a news release from the Maui Police Department.

Police said a gray 2014 Ford Focus operated by a 19-year-old Wailuku man was traveling northbound on Kaahumanu Avenue just past the intersection of Kane Avenue when it struck the male who was riding an electric skateboard in the same lane at approximately 11:07 p.m. Monday.

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The male’s age is unknown at this time.

It is unknown at this time whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision. Police are continuing their investigation.

This is Maui County’s 16th traffic-related fatality compared to 13 at the same time last year.
