Honolulu City Hall glows red for safety
Honolulu Hale is lit up in red until Sunday to recognize Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s “Tie One On for Safety” holiday campaign.
“We want everybody to get home safely when driving, riding or walking this holiday season,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell, who ordered City Hall to be illuminated, according to a city news release. “The MADD red ribbon is the most iconic nationwide campaign against driving under the influence.”
MADD began the campaign in 1986 as a way to remind holiday revelers to designate a nondrinking driver.
Roadways are often most dangerous between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, according to MADD. During the 2017 holiday season, drunken drivers caused 26 percent of all traffic fatalities nationwide.
Drivers can participate in the holiday campaign by “tying a MADD red ribbon onto their vehicles, driving sober and buckling up during the Thanksgiving holiday week,” Carol McNamee, founder of MADD Hawaii, said in a written statement.
“We all strive for no fatalities this coming week and throughout November and December,” she added.
