Beachgoers in the water as large waves crash near Rock Piles on Tuesday on Oahu’s North Shore. A high surf warning is in effect until Monday for north-facing shores of most islands.

A large north-northwest swell is fast approaching the state, bringing 20- to 30-foot surf to north shores most of the islands tonight, the National Weather Service said.

A high surf warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday for north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, and Molokai as well as north-facing shores of Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii island.

A high surf advisory is in effect for west-facing shores of Oahu and east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Big Island.

The weather service said surf will build to 20 to 30 feet tonight and hold through Sunday for north-facing shores of all the main islands except Kahoolawe and Lanai.

The swell will peak Sunday and gradually lower Sunday night.

During the warning, ocean water may sweep across portions of beaches with strong breaking waves and rip currents. Along east-facing shores, choppy breakers will increase with the strong trade winds, the weather service said.

Advisory level surf is expected to continue through much of the coming week.
