Motorcyclist dies after crash on Big Isle
A 45-year-old motorcyclist died in a two-vehicle collision in Holualoa Saturday.
He is identified as John Paul Simonsen.
Police said a green 2014 Subaru station wagon operated by a 77-year-old Holualoa woman was attempting to make a left turn onto Mamalahoa Highway from a private driveway when a red 2001 Honda motorcycle operated by Simonsen was traveling south on the roadway at approximately 8:30 a.m.
Simonsen reportedly lost control of the motorcycle and grazed the vehicle.
He was taken to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition where he died Sunday night from injuries sustained in the crash.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the station wagon was not injured.
Police said speed is a possible factor in the collision.
This is the 31st traffic-related fatality on Hawaii island compared to 32 at the same time last year.
