A high surf warning has been issued for the north and west facing shores of Hawaii’s smaller isles, effective from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday due to a large, northwest swell.

The high surf warning is also in effect for the north facing shores of Maui, and the west facing shores of the Big Island. The swell is expected to build rapidly Saturday morning, peak in the evening, and hold into the night before subsiding.

Weather officials said surf is expected to reach 25 to 35 feet on the north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, and Molokai, and the north facing shores of Oahu and Maui. Surf is expected to reach 18 to 25 feet for the west facing shores of Oahu.

Expect ocean water to surge and sweep across beaches, along with powerful rip currents and large, breaking waves that can impact harbor entrances and channels. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death, weather officials warned.

A small craft advisory has also been issued for most coastal water areas in the isles, effective from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday.
