University of Hawaii sailing wins Rainbow Invite

The University of Hawaii coed sailing team took the championship of the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite on Sunday at Keehi Lagoon. The win gave the UH sailors their fifth straight regatta title.

The Rainbow Green team, led by Michael Pacholski and Devon Stapleton in the A division and Patrick Wilkinson, Danielle Ahir and Shane Snow in the B division, led the competition with a regatta-low 119 points, 18 points ahead of runner up California.

After day 1, UH trailed Cal by a single point. On Sunday, UH’s B division team recorded three top-three finishes over the final six races.

The Rainbow White team placed fifth with 177 points, while the Rainbow Wahine took seventh, recording 207 points.

Next up for the UH women’s team is the Bryson Women’s Intersectional, Feb. 16-17 in Redwood City, Calif. The coed squad heads to the McIntyre Team Race, hosted by Stanford on Feb. 23-24.

Sandell wins platform dive event

For the second straight day, senior diver Johan Sandell recorded a top-five finish, but on Sunday, he won the platform dive event at the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.

Sandell entered Sunday’s men’s championship round with a preliminary score of 315.40, placing him second overall. He passed Connor Callahan of California with a final score of 680.15 to claim the title over a field of 12 divers. Last year, Sandell placed third in the same event.
