The Maui Electric Company said crews today are continuing restoration efforts in parts of Upcountry, including Haiku, Olinda and Piʿiholo to bring about 455 customers back online.

Customers in ʿIao Valley are also experiencing a power outage after a large tree came down on power lines, MECO said.

In addition to conducting damage assessments and repairs to electrical equipment brought down by storm impacts on Sunday, MECO is working with the county to clear trees and debris that are blocking roadways and restricting access.

“Our focus today is to take care of our remaining customers without power in these pockets of the island,” said Sharon Suzuki, president of Maui County and Hawaii island utilities, in a news release. “In many of these cases, crews are working to repair downed lines and poles brought down by the high winds and fallen trees.”

Approximately 30,500 customers across various parts of Maui County experienced power interruptions ranging from momentary to sustained outages on Sunday due to strong winds bringing down trees, power lines, and utility poles. A majority of them were restored by midnight.

Suzuki thanked customers for their patience as MECO continues to make repairs to the system.

“We also appreciate the support from the Maui Fire Department and Maui Police Department who have been helping to keep our community safe during this power restoration process,” she said.
