Subterranean spectacle: Icy stalagmites shine with reflected light inside Japan’s former Shojingawa Mine in Nanae, Hokkaido. More than 10,000 stalagmites — some having reached heights of over 6 feet — are growing underground there. Experts say stable winter temperatures inside the pit make falling drops of water form the ice towers, rather than icicles hanging on the ceiling.
