Big Island police officer accused of domestic violence

PAHOA >> The Hawaii Police Department says one of its patrol officers has been arrested and accused of domestic violence.

Police say Puna patrol Officer Daniel Ulrich is charged with two counts of abuse of a household member and one count of assault.

Police say 29-year-old Ulrich was involved in an off-duty argument Monday with a 36-year-old woman in his family. The woman was treated at Hilo Medical Center with injuries, including bruises on her throat.

According to police, Ulrich has been with the department for one year and is still on an 18-month probationary period. He has been placed on leave without pay pending an administrative investigation.

It’s unclear if Ulrich has an attorney. He was being held at a cellblock on $5,000 bail.
