2 Hawaii DOT workers hurt as dump truck flips in H-1 collision near Kunia
Two state Department of Transportation workers were injured in a multiple vehicle collision involving the dump truck they were operating today on H-1 freeway near Kunia.
The two men, ages 47 and 64, were taken to the hospital in serious condition, DOT officials said in an email.
The men were on duty, driving a dump truck westbound on the H-1 freeway when the truck crashed into a concrete center median, officials said. The truck flipped over and landed on the opposite side of the median.
Witness statements said the truck was cut off and swerved to avoid a collision with a passenger vehicle, transportation officials said, adding that more details are being gathered.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded shortly after noon. EMS personnel treated and transported the two men to a hospital. EMS said they were the driver and the passenger of the dump truck.
EMS also evaluated drivers of the other vehicles, but they refused transportation to the hospital for treatment, an EMS report said.
