Water main breaks throughout Oahu result in road closures

Several water main breaks this morning have resulted in road closures throughout Oahu, from Mapunapuna to Salt Lake to Kalaeloa, according to city officials.

At about 3 a.m., officials closed Ala Ilima Street between Ala Laulani and Ala Kamaile streets in the Salt Lake area due to a broken water main. Then at about 8:45 a.m., officials closed Kilihao Street by Ahua Street in Mapunapuna due to a water main break.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews responded to the 12-inch water main break near 3341 Ala Ilima St. early this morning. Approximately 19 residential customers and two fire hydrants are impacted. A spigot attached to a fire hydrant at 3292 Ala Ilima St. is available for use by affected customers.

BWS crews are also working to assess the situation in Mapunapuna, while police officers are directing traffic at the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes until the road is reopened.

Additionally, access to Roosevelt Avenue on Kalaeloa via the Hawaiian Railway Society yard on Philippine Sea Road is closed while BWS crews work to replace a service lateral pipe at the tracks near the entrance to the facility in Varona Village, Ewa. Police will close Renton Road at Kalaeloa Blvd. to through traffic, and allow local traffic, only, to enter the area.

Access to the Hawaiian Railway Society yard from Renton Road is closed. Hawaiian Railway Society visitors are advised to enter through the Roosevelt Avenue and Philippine Sea Road side of the facility.

Meanwhile, BWS crews have been working on repairs on a 42-inch transmission water main on the bike path outside Keehi Refuse Transfer Station since Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, crews had to close a valve on Dillingham Boulevard near the Marukai Wholesale Warehouse, impacting nine businesses.

Crews are also continuing repairs on an 8-inch water main break near 2013 Kaumualii Street in Kalihi that was reported at 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Approximately 24 residential customers and three fire hydrants were impacted.
