The Hawaii softball team used the long ball and solid pitching to sweep UC Riverside on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawaii won the second game on Callee Heen’s three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning in Hawaii’s 4-1 win.

The Rainbow Wahine’s Cheeks Ramos hit a game-tying homer in the fourth.

Izzy Dino allowed one run over 41⁄3 innings and Brittany Hitchcock pitched 32⁄3 scoreless innings for Hawaii.

In the first game, the Rainbow Wahine hit five home runs and Hitchcock pitched a three-hitter in a 9-1 five-inning victory.

Brittnee Rossi, Nicole Lopez, Alyssa Sojka, Madison Veldman and Jenna Kumabe homered for Hawaii.

Veldman finished with three RBIs and Lopez scored twice and drove in two.

The Rainbow Wahine improved to 30-13, 11-4 Big West and the Highlanders fell to 23-22, 5-10.

University of Hawaii water polo team advances to semis

Irene Gonzalez scored six goals as the second-seeded Hawaii water polo team beat third-seeded UC Davis 14-7 in the semifinals of the Big West Conference tournament Saturday in Long Beach, Calif.

Gonzalez’s goal total was a conference tournament single-game record.

Maxine Schaap, Elyse Lemay-Lavoie and Carmen Baringo each added two goals for the Rainbow Wahine. Molly DiLalla recorded five saves.

Hawaii (17-5) will face top-seeded UC Irvine in today’s final in a rematch of last season’s title game.

Hawaii Hilo baseball takes pair from Point Loma

The Hawaii Hilo baseball team swept a doubleheader against No. 22 Point Loma on Saturday in San Diego.

In the first game, Jacob Morales pitched 41⁄3 innings of scoreless relief and Devan Elson didn’t allow a baserunner over the final three innings as the Vulcans beat the Sea Lions 6-4.

RJ Romo batted 3-for-5 for Hilo, which trailed 4-0 after two innings.

In the seven-inning second game, Travis Burleson scattered seven hits in a complete-game performance with eight strikeouts and Romo had a two-run double in the third as Hilo triumphed 2-1.

The Vulcans improved to 25-16, 21-11 PacWest, while the Sea Lions fell to 28-17, 16-11.

In the first game, Garrett O’Callaghan pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the Hawks’ 7-0 victory.

Joshua Muneno pitched 22⁄3 scoreless innings of relief for the Sharks.

In the second game, Jordan Mopas batted 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs in the Sharks’ 6-4 loss.

The Sharks dropped to 22-27, 9-22 PacWest, while the Hawks improved to 16-27, 10-17.

Chaminade tops Hilo in softball

Kayla Henmi scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Chaminade softball team beat Hawaii Hilo 4-3 on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Madelyn Stockslager pitched a five-hitter and Ashlyn Yagin drove in two runs for the Silverswords (13-34, 10-25 PacWest).

Markie Okamoto went 2-for-3 for the Vulcans (29-17, 22-11).

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed because of rain.

University of Hawaii women’s tennis team advances to Big West final

The fourth-seeded Hawaii women’s tennis team defeated top-seeded UC Santa Barbara 4-3 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Big West tournament in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine held a 3-0 lead before the Gauchos rallied to tie it. In the deciding match, Hawaii’s Maayan Sela beat Elizaveta Volodko 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Petra Melounova and Michelle Pits also won singles matches, while the Rainbow Wahine won the doubles point on victories by Melounova/Nikola Dolakova and Alzbeta Houbova/Sela.

Hawaii will play Long Beach State in today’s final.

Brent Grant leads Mid-Pacific Open

Brent Grant shot a third-round 1-over-par 73 on Saturday to maintain his lead in the professional flight of the Mid-Pacific Open.

Grant is at 12-under 204 at Mid-Pacific Country Club. PJ Samiere is three shots back and Jared Sawada is four back.

In the championship flight, Matt Ma is at 5-under 211 and has a six-stroke lead over Tyler Ota.

2019 officials’ hall class announced

Seven officials with more than 300 years of combined experience spread across basketball, boxing, football, softball and wrestling have been selected to the Hawaii Sports Officials Hall of Fame, it was announced Saturday.

Louis Fuentes Jr. (basketball), George Gusman (football), David “Koko” Mahukona (basketball), Herbert Minn (boxing), Wayne Ohashi (wrestling), Joe Ornellas (football) and Herbert Paleka Jr. (softball) will be honored in ceremonies Sept. 8 at the Ala Moana Hotel.

The honorees were chosen on the basis of achievement in areas of character, leadership, skill and commitment to officiating, the HSOHF said in statement.

They comprise the second class of inductees for the HSOHF, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote public awareness of officials and their value to sports and the community.
